Do I really need a lawyer or can I just ask AI?

This is a question that is becoming more and more common. Rather than answering it ourselves, we decided to ask Chat GTP that very question and let the robots speak for themselves. Here is the answer produced, without any editing:-

“ In Australia, AI can provide general legal information and assist with simple tasks like document preparation, but it cannot replace a lawyer for complex legal matters or court representation. Legal practice is regulated to ensure professional standards, which AI currently cannot fully meet. While AI tools can improve access to legal services and support lawyers in routine tasks, consulting a qualified lawyer is essential for nuanced legal advice and accountability. AI's role in legal practice is expected to grow, but it will likely complement rather than replace human lawyers.”

To us, the answer is a similar answer to that I would expect to receive from a plumber, an electrician, a pilot and a chef or any other trade or profession. If you ask a plumber whether you really need them to install your new septic system when you can just ask YouTube how to do it, watch a few videos and then get to work, I am sure they would look at you quite horrified and physically distance themselves as far from the septic as possible.

The world of technology is galloping forward and AI is here to stay. There is a place for emerging AI to assist with simple tasks, like perhaps talking you through changing a broken washer on a tap. But when it comes to connecting your sewerage, getting the necessary approvals, reporting to the relevant authorities and just generally not getting toilet waste on your face, there is and will always be a role for qualified specialists.

Even if the running jokes about lawyers suggest otherwise, it is the “being human” part of engaging with a lawyer that is valuable. Experience, empathy, ability to spot nuances and provide practical guidance. The knowledge to understand that ‘textbook’ answer and apply it to the specific people, places and events.

Unfortunately, the messy result from not engaging professionals can create lingering issues that can not be washed or air freshener-ed  away
